Reading Response 11: Don't be skurred! (means...
“The biggest problem designers face is fear: fear of clients, fear of failure, fear of ideas. Our ability to overcome fear is perhaps the greatest skill we can acquire. Most bad design, most mediocre design, is a consequence of fear.”
If this ain’t the truth, then I don’t know WHAT is!
Being apart of an industry that’s all about taking risks, thinking outside the...
Reading Response 10: Don't forget, you're werking...
^^ It doesn’t have to be like this. ^^
With the vast presence of technology in our lives today, it’s easy to forget interpersonal skills when talking or werking with other people. You might disagree with me on this and say, “Nah, I’m good! I know how to work with people.” That’s cool. You might be the ultimate people person, but what about your client?

The Elevator Pitch (I hope it makes cents)
What did I sign myself up for? I could’ve done this thesis project on anything in the world, but I chose to do this. I have never challenged myself so emotionally to design anything like this. I hope it works out, not only for me, but most importantly for people I hope to help.
New Friends
I spent my second night at Operation Nightwatch and had a great time playing Apples to Apples, handing out my questionnaire, and getting to know everyone there.
The greatest reward was getting people to smile, laugh and enjoy themselves during their time there. A man thanked me for genuinely listening to him babble for 20 minutes because, he “feels like no one ever wants to listen to him...
First Draft: SSC Wish List
Fold out, double sided poster mailer with information about what type of necessities they need and where people can donate. Will be printed on newsprint.
Definitely still a work in progress!
My Saturday Night
On Saturday evening, I spent some time at Operation Nightwatch, a ministry that focuses on nurturing relationships with those who are homeless, mentally ill or low income.
I had the opportunity to meet some very inspiring people, play some board games, and help out around the ministry to distribute goods throughout the night.
At first, it was difficult to be in an environment that...

MOMENT OF TRUTH
Reading Response 9: Bidness Etiquette
1. Tackle the nasty parts first.
2. Manage your time, and manage it well.
3. Design with reason, strategize.
4. Explain your work well, both on paper and in person.
5. Don’t show up unannounced.
6. Spell check.
7. Let your interviewer see your work.
8. Find clients/employers that keep you going.
9. Take responsibility.
10. Be appreciative.
Reading Response 8: "A Fight Worth Fighting"
As a design student today, what I find most challenging is acquiring the skills I need to make the things I want.
There’s a lot of talented designers out there, and a lot of skill sets to learn in order to keep up or truly define what your own style is. Working towards becoming “a truly multifaceted designer” can be extremely exhausting, but so much fun at the same time...
It seems our very sense of self worth is predicted more and more on our...

Where were you when you heard about 9/11?
Osama has been caught, William and Kate are married, the south is recovering from a major storm, and the Blazers are done for the season.
These are some of the major headlines from the past few days, all of which I’m sure you all are familiar with by now thanks to social media, or people you know who heard about it through social media. It amazes me every single time how big of a role...

Reading Response 7: The Experience
No, I’m not referring to the Michael Jackson video game that is coming out.
I’m talking about Sagmeister’s view on art, and whether or not it’s possible to touch somebody’s heart with design.
I really enjoyed this reading because it made me think more about design and those who design things.
Sagmeister talks about how he feels design today is “full of...

Reading Response 6: Directed Storytelling
“DESIGN IS MEANING-MAKING.”
This is a powerful statement in relation to how big of a role designers have as a messenger, a communicator, a translator to the world. Little dramatic, I know, but it’s so true!
Many designers have come across a client or project where they cannot relate (you’re lucky if you haven’t), understand or care about regardless how hard...
Reading Response: 4 + 5 (Sub w/own article)
As I begin doing research for my thesis, I get a little more nervous each time I think about it. I think this is a good thing.
Let’s face it, interacting with homeless people isn’t easy. I’ve been harassed by homeless people in ways that still make me cringe today. They’re the reason why I’m afraid to walk the streets at night alone, or take public transportation....
Thesis: Spare Some Change
We all know that it’s difficult to get along with a lot of homeless people.
There’s a LOT of issues involved, and a lot of things that we don’t want to hear when we talk about the homeless.
My term long project will focus on making it easier for people like you and I to interact with homeless people, and find positive solutions to how we can help.
I’ll be interviewing...
Reading Response 3: Art + Social Practice
Art and social practice takes a look at how people relate to each other and their environment. This is an interesting communication method today, especially since a lot of people lately are so focused on staying connected digitally over social media platforms. #stupidmyspace!
I like to think of social practice as a more human way of advertising. It’s more thoughtful,...

Thesis Idea 3: Learn Something New Everyday
It’s always fun to learn something new, for me especially about other cultures or people. ANOTHER idea for my thesis project (I think I’m thinking about this project too much) is to learn something new everyday and draw it out. Maybe even photograph it and have it be a fun exploration project about people in Portland. My only rule would be that it would have to be about different...

Thesis Idea 2: Recreate Movie Posters
Superhero action-adventure movies are my favorite type of movies to watch. I could spend an entire weekend watching movies like Batman, Spider-Man, Star Trek (new version) and X-men. I’ve never done a full-on, 100% illustration project before and thought it would be cool to redraw my favorite movie covers. This project was inspired by the awesome Tyler Stout.
Inspired by...
Reading Response 1 + 2: How do we design for...
Growing up, we’ve always been encouraged to think “outside of the box” and that ability is what defines “true creativity.” As I learn more about design, I think that “true creativity” is taking what you have inside of the box and working with what you have to make something great. This week’s reading reinforces that thought as Frank and Liz discuss...
Ideas for Relational Design Project
Idea 1: “Option 1”
A positive attitude can make a big difference in making or breaking your day. This event will encourage people to think positively and share their ideas with others. We’ll provide sheets of paper that ask questions like, “What makes you happy?” “What do you appreciate?” “What do you think is awesome?” etc and allow...
Thesis Idea 1: Change Perspectives About Homeless...
When you think of homeless people, what do you think of? Perhaps a lot of what you’re thinking are negative experiences or stereotypes. I don’t blame you.
I’m sure there’s more to being homeless than a lot of people care to think about.
What if I interviewed five homeless people to understand who they are and where they come from, and shared it with you all.
Would...
